Beide heren gefeliciteerd. Masha pabien. Tebrik ederim.
December 14th 2008 Johan Croes (Aruba) and Cedrick "Tula" Copra (Curacao) proved to be "Masters of the Ring", when they fought fighters of Mike's Gym Amsterdam-North in the lion's den Zonnehuis Amsterdam North. Croes won even by KO in the 1st round. Copra kicked his opponent that he flew with both feet in the air what resulted in the "Photo of the Year".
Other A-class Thai-kickboxers like Cedric Bacuna (won in May this year on Curacao Benito Caupain), Benjey Zimmerman and Jemyma Betrian were also very successful and in 2008 with several victories. Kim Steward and Rudolf Conquet, both trained by Eric Constancia, were successful during the Open Dutch Championships Kyokushin Karate in Papendrecht. Conquet was the fourth time heavyweight champion and Kim Stewart, daughter of karateka Dr. Rick Stewart, won bronze.
In the year 2008 there were a lot of great performances by Curacao athletes, but the title "Fighter of the Year" was won clear by Taekwondoka Cedric Meulens.
Cedric won because of his "Fighting Spirit" and Martial Arts mentality (discipline, perseverance, but also patience) during his rehabilitation process.
In October Cedric suffered a spinal injury . At that moment he was, as coach of Dutch Antillean Taekwondo team, in Mexico, and was operated directly in Mexico. After hospitalization, he went to the Rehabilitation Center Curaçao De SGR Group.
Cedric's life is dominated by sport. In the pictures; Cedric, Leendert Verwey and Edwin Baas on the podium at a championship of the Dutch Taekwondo Federation TBN in 1993, Cedric as trainer/coach of Tram Curacao that was very successful in Suriname July 2008.
Now Cedric is busy with his toughest fight. The goal, however, is not a trophy or championship, but a different purpose.

In October and November 2008 we had more guests like Dennis Rock, Rivo Slory and Aiven Sprang.
Dennis Rock from Rock Gym Zaandam and Edwin Baas know each other very well. In the time Baas had a Thaiboxing school in Haarlem, there were frequent exchanges between the two schools. Dennis brought many top-fighters; Melvin Manhoef, Milco Voorn, Denise Ris, Jamila Amestoun and Peter Dollekamp.
Rivo Sory is a professional boxer and Muay Thai kickboxer from Vos gym Amsterdam.
Former world champion Aiven Sprang belongs with Lucien Carbin and Rob Kaman to the Dutch champions for the first hour. They were in the early 80's the first who competed on the world stage and became World Champions. January 15 1984 Ivan Sprang gained worldwide fame by the world title fight against the American Benny "The Jet" Urquidez. Furthermore Sprang was successful in several disciplines. In France he became champion in savate, a French form of kickboxing, by winning the French on their own rules. In kickboxing rules Sprang won Naoki Ishino (Japan) and in Thai boxing rules Sprang won Vanpedej (Thailand).
