In August 2001 Edwin Baas came to Curaçao. After a few days, on August 31, Baas already acted as referee of all fights that night. To close the night Baas fought a 5 rounds exhibition bout against multiple champion Ronald "The Man of Steel" Sluis. Sluis won a lot of championship belts, like the Caribbean title WKN (World Kickboxing Network) by defeating Neil Frederick (Trinidad & Tobago), the intercontinental title and he also won World Champion IKBF (International Kick Boxing Federation) Ted van Rijn (The Netherlands).

September 29 2001 Ron van Leeuwe, a former school friend (Grafische School Haarlem), made his ring debut. Ron "The Dutch Lion" won several Thai-Kickboxing fights in Curacao and Aruba.
Baas also supported John Lobato from Chi Sportschool with the training, preparation and coaching of his fighters Ralph Maduro, Sharlimar Zimmerman and Marlon Albertoe. November 3rd 2001 @ SDK Zimmerman fought the full 5 rounds vs Anthony Ignacio (Aruba), Albertoe won Devon Hodge (Aruba) by 1st round TKO and the opponent of Maduro did not show up.
December 1st 2001 Ron van Leeuwe won with a roundhouse kick to the head in the 1st second of the 1st round.
Raymond Juliana, a.k.a. “Mayron” or "Lonchi", demonstrated that even if you have disabilities, you also have a lot of abilities.

With former world karate champion Dudley Josepa and others, Edwin Baas founded in 2003 CUMAFE (Curacao Martial Arts Federation) and with CUMAFE Baas organized various activities, like a gathering training @ Marinekazerne Parera (see newspaper below). The host Ruud Hardjokosoemo, karate sensei of the naval base, trained kickboxing at Baas in Haarlem.

Ramiro Sabina, 40 years and still going strong, provided the highlight of the evening. He made his comeback in the ring and revenges his only loss in boxing by a sublime way to beat Tom Juliana. Besides 23 fights in Thai-kickboxing Ramiro had seven boxing fights, which he only lost one and that was against Tom Juliana. This time Ramiro was well prepared and won in the 4th round by knock out. The King is back.

The year 2004 had also a very sad moment.
September 20 2004 Nordin Ben Salah died at age of 32 years.
Bensalah, also known as "Fighting Nordin" was born in M'Tioua (Morocco) and was one of the greatest athletes, who became world champion in Muay Thai and professional boxing. Nordin was an example to many, like his older brother Habib Ben Salah was for him.
Edwin Baas has known Nordin since 1989, when he went with Sitan gym Hoofddorp to Enschede where Nordin won Abdel "Muis" Belaini.
The Muay Thai world title he won in 1994 by a victory over Dany Bille from France / Cameroon. The pro-boxing world title he won in 1999 by winning the German Nieroba.
Nordin was very sympathetic and a great sportsman, who has done a lot for the sport.
If he gave a guest training to the group of Edwin Baas in Haarlem, he did not even charge for the petrol costs. He did it voluntarily for the sports and for the youth.
For him gratitude was enough. That gratitude was, is and will always remain. We will never forget Nordin.
In 2005 there were a lot of CUMAFE activities. In the pic below a gathering at SDK, training camp at Landhuis Pannekoek and Thai-kickbox exhibition at karate competitions by members of Baas Sports; Louraine Girigori, Julius-Ann Johanns, Daniel Harmsen and Gerardo Harmsen.

Baas Sports also took part with a karateka. Julius-Ann Johanns (46 kg) won the third place in the open class kumite for ladies.

November 6 2005 Palmira Baas-Sandvliet became "Cardio Kickboxing Instructor". The course was given by Raul de Windt and the lessons "Injuries, prevention and first aid" by physiotherapist Edwin Baas.
Edwin Baas did a big MMA promotion in 2005. In June MMA training by RINGS World champion Joop van Kasteel (he won this title by KO over Dan Severn from the USA) in the dojo of the Naval Base Parera.

November 13 2005 Free Fight Championship 2005. Johnny Brazao (52 kg) from Baas Sports showed a lot of "fighting spirit" and won a 5 kg heavier opponent by TKO and fought the final against a 16 pounds heavier opponent.

December 10 2005 CUMAFE had a great "Night of the Martial Arts" with exhibitions in karate, taekwondo, judo, jiu jitsu, aikido, capoeira, krav maga and competitions in Muay Thai kickboxing and MMA.
Baas Sports was very successful. Kristy Ooms won a Thai Boxing match and Tim Hulsman won his Canadian opponent in a MMA fight.
Mayron Juliana demonstrated that with a physical disability you also can practice martial arts. Video

Danny "Warwaru" van der Veen started May 2003 with Muay Thai Kickboxing at Baas Sports Curacao. July 2004 he went to The Netherlands with a record of 6 wins and no losses. In 2005 he picked up the sport and won one fight after the other; March 20 he won in Weert, April 17 he won by KO 2nd round at K-1 fight Night in Valkenswaard, June 26 he won by TKO 1st round in Valkenswaard, October 2nd draw at Gentlemen Fight Night in Tilburg, October 9 he won by TKO 3rd round at "Shogun 2005" in Den Bosch, October 29 he won by TKO 3rd round at "Showtime" in Den Bosch, November 11 he won in Spijkenisse and February 9 2006 Danny won in Deventer by 1st round KO.
