In August 2001 Edwin Baas came to Curaçao. After a few days Baas already acted as referee and fought to finish the night a 5 rounds exhibition bout against multiple champion Ronald "The Man of Steel" Sluis. Sluis won a lot of championship belts, like the Caribbean title WKN (World Kickboxing Network) by defeating Neil Frederick (Trinidad & Tobago) and he won World Champion IKBF (International Kick Boxing Federation) Ted van Rijn (The Netherlands).

Baas started to train a small group and had in a few months his first competition fighter that was fighting for him. Ron van Leeuwe, a former school friend (Grafische School Haarlem), won several Thai-Kickboxing fights in Curacao and Aruba. December 1st 2001 he won in the first second, the fastest KO ever.

Another pupil of Baas, was the handicapped Raymond “Mayron” Juliana, who demonstrated that even if you have disabilities, you also have a lot of abilities.

Baas also helped John Lobato from Chi Sportschool with the preparation and guidance of his fighters Ralph Maduro, Sharlimar Zimmerman and Marlon Albertoe.
There were several guest trainers. In 2002 Edsel van de Leuv and Apy Echteld (video). In 2003 Jon Bluming, Ilonka Elmont, Lucien Carbin and Frank Lobman.
May 2003 Sherman Bonofacio, who gave kickboxing training in the facility of Radulphus College, moved to The Netherlands. Baas took over his group.
In Trinidad Serwin Concincion won Richard Boodram (Trinidad & Tobago) and became Pan-American Champion WKN super featherweight.
3 other fighters from Baas were also successful in May 2003. Leyron Marcos won Rudsel Nisia, Ariel Concepcion won Arnold Drenthe and Narswin Betrian won Mercelina.

July 4th 2003 Baas Sports Curacao made a very strong impression and was very successful @ an International Thaiboxing event. Baas Sports had 7 fighters that night and 6 victories. Thurston Joseph, Danny van der Veen, Roderick Meijsing, Rines Martina (Rojer), Raylison Aitatus and Milangelo Eugenio won their opponents from Dominican Republic, Aruba, St. Maarten, Trinidad & Tobago and the Netherlands.
Replacer Gregory Costina with 2 weeks’ notice lost 8 kg for this fight against Tyrone Spong. The A class fighter Spong won and remained unbeaten. World Champion Ilonka Elmont won Stigdem Cinar. Jerry Morris won Chris van Venrooy by walk-over and won the WFCA world title.

August 16 2003 Baas Sports was again very successful and did not even lost one fight. Video
Leyron Marcos (Baas Sports) won Richard Boodram (Trinidad & Tobago).
Reno Mooyweer (Baas Sports) was on the winning hand in his fight against light heavyweight champion Raidel Granviel (Free Way Fist Cijntje), but suddenly in the 2nd round Reno’s upper arm dislocated. The fight was stopped and ended in a "technical draw".
Danny van der Veen (Baas Sports) knocked out super middleweight champion Arnold Drenthe (Thai Flying Dragon) in the first round.

In Suriname, December 19 2003, Curacao was represented by Baas Sports. Edwin Baas went with Karel Jamanika, Caribbean Champion WKN super middleweight. The title he won by beating Donald Snaggs from Trinidad & Tobago.

With former world karate champion Dudley Josepa and others, Edwin Baas founded in 2003 CUMAFE (Curacao Martial Arts Federation) and with CUMAFE Baas organized various activities, like a gathering training @ Marinekazerne Parera (see newspaper below). The host Ruud Hardjokosoemo, karate sensei of the naval base, trained kickboxing at Baas in Haarlem.

February 8 2004 Ariel Concepcion, Danny van der Veen, Trevor Bomas and Kevin Abraham, all from Baas Sports, won their opponents from Kickboxing Attaf. There were also great performances by Achraf Kayouf and Anthony Rojas.
April 30 2004 Danny van der Veen and Roderik Meijsing, both Baas Sports, won their fight by TKO 2nd round. Roderik won Briand Victorina (Free Way Fist) and Danny won Rudsel Nisia (Thai Flying Dragon). Roderik and Danny qualified the finals for the CurThaiBo Championship titles on May 7.
May 7 2004 Roderik Meijsing and Danny van der Veen, both won the CurThaiBo kickboxing titles. Ferry Sukasman made his ring debut with a pro-boxing bout.
Ramiro Sabina, 40 years and still going strong, provided the highlight of the evening. He made his comeback in the ring and revenges his only loss in boxing by a sublime way to beat Tom Juliana. Besides 23 fights in Thai-kickboxing Ramiro had seven boxing fights, which he only lost one and that was against Tom Juliana. This time Ramiro was well prepared and won in the 4th round by knock out. The King is back.

At the CUMAFE Championships, May 29 2004, all fighters from Baas Sports (Trevor Bomas, Jemuel Cleofa and Danny van der Veen) won the first prices.
June 25-27 2004 CUMAFE Training Camp @ "Parke Brakapoti" Brakkeput.
July 27 2004 Apy Echteld from 2H2H (Too Hot To Handle) gave a MMA seminar. Video
August 2004 Dennis Arentsen (Baas) won the Antillean Cup Thaiboxing by 1st round KO. Video
October 2 2004 all Baassports fighters (Jemuel Cleofa, Roderik Meijsing and Thurston Joseph) won their fight and qualified for the WKN Championships.

Harley Pimienta won an experienced fighter and kickboxing instructor of The Pyramid.
Thurston Joseph and Roderik Meijsing both won Antillean WKN title belts by defeating opponents from St. Maarten.
Milangelo Eugenio won the Caribbean WKN belt by defeating Johan Croes, Aruba and Caribbean Muay-Thai champion.
All fighters from Baas Sports received their belts from WKN-president Stephane Cabrera from France. Video

December 4 2004 CUMAFE (Curacao Martial Arts Federation) organized "Nochi di Arte Marsial" with Karate and Taekwondo by the CUMAFE affiliated clubs, including; Karate Kan Salinja (Dudley Josepa), Raul Martial Arts (Raul de Windt), Dividivi Karate Club (Glenn Rijker), Karate-Do Curacao (Antony Leito / Yvonne Leito-Senf), Mucsan Taekwondo (Humphrey Braafhart) and Taekwondo school Curacao (Juny La Croes), Judo by Hubertico Balentien, Aikido by Frank Wong Loi Sing, Capoeira by Exel Arts Academy, Kung Fu by Harley Pimienta from Colombia (who in Curacao trains Thai Boxing @ Baas Sports), Muay Thai kickboxing by Baas Sports (Stephen Liu, Louraine Girigori and Ariel Concepcion), Mixed Martial Arts by Edwin Baas and Gregory Costina.
What also was very impressive was the exhibition by Mayron Juliana, who showed that despite a physical disability you can practice martial arts. Mayron defended himself against both armed and unarmed attacks and showed that he can fight back. Video

The year 2004 had also a very sad moment.
September 20 2004 Nordin Ben Salah died at age of 32 years.
Bensalah, also known as "Fighting Nordin" was born in M'Tioua (Morocco) and was one of the greatest athletes, who became world champion in Muay Thai and professional boxing. Nordin was an example to many, like his older brother Habib Ben Salah was for him.
Edwin Baas has known Nordin since 1989, when he went with Sitan gym Hoofddorp to Enschede where Nordin won Abdel "Muis" Belaini.
The Muay Thai world title he won in 1994 by a victory over Dany Bille from France / Cameroon. The pro-boxing world title he won in 1999 by winning the German Nieroba.
Nordin was very sympathetic and a great sportsman, who has done a lot for the sport.
If he gave a guest training to the group of Edwin Baas in Haarlem, he did not even charge for the petrol costs. He did it voluntarily for the sports and for the youth.
For him gratitude was enough. That gratitude was, is and will always remain. We will never forget Nordin.
